Borderland community asks President Obama to preserve Castner Range

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM)

Thousands of people in the Borderland community are asking President Obama to designate Castner Range a national monument.

Congressman Beto O’Rourke is supporting local groups in their effort to preserve more than 7,000 acres of land in Northeast el paso.

“This is a beautiful place and we want to preserve this with everything we have,” said Vickie Dye.

Many El Pasoans call Castner Range a jewel to our region.

“It’s home. It’s home for a lot of things. It’s home for desert animals, it’s home for our poppies,” adds Dye.

The El Paso Museum of Archaeology site is the only portion of Castner Range open to the public, the rest is off limits for safetey concerns.

“From 1920 to 1966, Castner Range was used by Fort Bliss, and it was used as a firing range, where they would practice and use artillery,” said Janae Reneaud Field, director of the Frontera Land Alliance…
